Although I admired scholarship so much in Cleric, I was not deceived about myself; I knew that I should never be a scholar. I could never lose myself for long among impersonal things. Mental excitement was apt to send me with a rush back to my own naked land and the figures scattered upon it. While I was in the very act of yearning toward the new forms that Cleric brought up before me, my mind plunged away from me, and I suddenly found myself thinking of the places and people of my infinitesimal past. They stood out strengthened and simplified now, like the image of the plough against the sun. They were all I had for an answer to the new appeal. I begrudged the room that Jake and Otto and Russian Peter took up in my memory, which I wanted to crowd with other things. But whenever my consciousness was quickened, all those early friends were quickened within it, and in some strange way they accompanied me through all my new experiences. They were so much alive in me that I scarcely stopped to wonder whether they were alive anywhere else, or how.

rating: 4 of 5 stars
I really enjoyed this book. My Antonia captures the characters so perfectly that you feel as if you know them, that indeed you grew up with them, too. It is a nostalgic book, one about big themes like growing up, losing loved ones, making the big mistakes, the way that place shapes us, the ties that bind us so strongly to those who grew up the same way and in the same places.
Most of all, though it is a book written for a place in time, a love song to Nebraska and those who settled her, and an elegy for the innocence of childhood. This book was right up my alley. Highly recommended and an easy read.

i am jealous of your recent trip. funny you ran into mike. be interested to know where you went, stayed, etc. mindy and i are looking to go somewhere for her 40th in may. i haven’t heard much about MERGEXX and missed seeing Mac at my favorite pizza joint here during sxsw. i was going to go get a slice and see a merge band but pussied out at the last minute. found out he was there, bummer. i know the spoon is playing but no signs of a line up. actually just got another package of the SCORE subscription today. its awesome. every once in a while a get a package in the mail, it makes going to the mailbox fun. been working a little, but more at our house. real estate is a bullshit industry these days, but it will bounce back i guess. i liked your story about movie night. hope ya’ll are well. more when they publish the band list. take care.

Not-so-recent. It was 2001. Before they were hit by the hurricane, but i have heard they have built back up a lot since then.
Yes, standing in the airport on Ambergris Caye and looking over and thinking, “That guy is really tall. Probably as tall as Mike Maier. Hey, that IS Mike Maier. What the hell is mike maier doing in Belize during MY honeymoon!” Turned out he was on my flight back to Belize City, and then back to Atlanta, too.
We went to Ambergris Caye, stayed at the Capt. Morgan’s place (of Temptation Island fame). It was GREAT. Awesome rooms. The little town, San Pedro, is great. The beaches there are v. different. They have a lot of seaweed stuff on the bottom. Great snorkeling and diving, though. I still can’t believe that someone said, “Jump in. Sharks won’t hurt you.” and I did it. Went inland to a spa in the jungle (by boat!) and toured some Mayan ruins. Locals were great.
Email me if you have more specific questions. I think Mike also went to Guatemala on his trip, too. Tikal, maybe? Anyway, i would highly recommend it. Great country.
Sorry you missed Mac. BTW, my husband might be in town for work in April. I will give him your address, and maybe you can tell him cool stuff to do. I will be here plotting his demise in jealousy.
Glad you liked movie night story!
