Nephew Love

Monday, June 28th, 2010

My in-laws are comin’! Running around like a chicken with my head cut off, but needed to post a little something this morning about my favorite nephew. He turned two and we attended his birthday party on Saturday.

Little Birdman is Two!

Little Birdman is Two!

How can he be two? Seems like just yesterday I held him for the first time. I can’t believe that I love something so much, almost as much as my own two kiddos. But I look at him and I see my baby sister, and it is one of the sweetest feelings I have ever had.

Icing on the Thomas the Tank Engine cake? I got to sit in a chair with this little guy sleeping on my chest.

Afterwards, watched USA in the World Cup (sad game) with friends and no chilluns (always fun). I ran into a friend from high school. I went swimming in my clothes. I drank Red Bull and Vodka (a decidedly for-the-childless concoction). Best Husband ever (and I am not kidding here – how, again, did I find one that can put up with me and my shenanigans?) picked me up and took me home at the perfect time. Spent Sunday with him and the family at the pool – the perfect balm for my slightly aching head.

In-laws come in today to bring me my new (used) freezer (frozen veggies!), and then we go to the beach on Friday. Feels like a great week. Hope everyone else’s is the same.

For Matt and Shannon: I Like You

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

My dear friends Matt and Shannon got married this past Saturday in Auburn. (Todd and Matt grew up together in Auburn.) The in-laws kept the spawn, so Todd and I had a whole weekend of fun, staying in a hotel and hanging out with friends by the pool. Much fun was had by all, and i think we are still recovering. (I know I am.)

We took less photos than we usually do at get togethers like this. I can only chalk it up to the heat and not wanting to carry anything around that I didn’t have to have on me. Also, it’s hard to hold a drink and take photos at the same time.

We did get some good ones, though.

Here is me with T at the Rehearsal at St. Dunstan’s. It was so freakin’ hot, I thought i would die.

Look! We’re sober!
Me and T

Jess, Scott Henderson’s wife, and Matt’s mom, Fiona, whom i adore.

Erin, the sister of the bride and Maid of Honor, hammin’ it up at the Rehearsal dinner, which was at a nice restaurant called Hamilton’s. The food was great! It was just too hot to eat a ton of it, which we really paid for later.
Sister of the Bride

Shannon, the Bride, looking not at all nervous, even though I know she was exhausted. But she never showed it.
The Bride

Todd’s friends Tom and Brian were in town. They are always a blast to hang out with, although I was a little upset Brian didn’t bring Nikki. For those of you who went to HS with me, Brian started a job on Monday and he works at the same company as Brett Shell. Small world, huh?
Tom and Brian

Old friends, Scott and Ned, at the Rehearsal dinner. They grew up in Auburn with Todd, but I actually met them years before I met Todd, when they both went to school in Athens. How strange is that?
Scott and Ned

After the rehearsal dinner, we went to The Independent, which was pretty cool for an Auburn bar. They had a pool table. Adam kicked my ass in pool for a few hours, but all y’all know how i like to play games and drink beer, so i enjoyed it anyway. Then we played quarters at about 1 am. Yep. In a bar. I also enjoyed that, despite another ass-kicking.
Adam Fears My Prowess at the Pool Table

Carlie and Brandon were there, too! I love them.
Carlie

And then Ned drove me home (thanks again, Ned!), so Todd could hang out longer, and then my head kind of hurt Saturday morning. I know there is a correlation here somewhere, but I just can’t connect the dots.

Somehow, i worked through the lack of sleep and the pounding head, and then hit the pool with Todd and friends. Why does a pool feel so damn good when you have a hangover? The only thing ruining it was the presence of the most obnoxious Florida Gator fan i have ever met in my life.

Got dressed for the wedding, in my new red dress. I was having one of those self-defeating “hate my hair, hate my body days.” And then I got tons of compliments, which was nice and ironic, but really all i wanted to do was take that bitch off and get in an ice bath.

The wedding was at Greystone, which, you may remember is where Todd and I got hitched. And Ned and Vanessa. And Iain and Noelle. So, it was pretty cute that Shannon wanted the four couples to be included in a photo for the wedding photographs. I am looking forward to seeing that one.

This is Matt’s mom at the wedding. How sweet does she look?
Fiona

So, the wedding was at five? And it was about 98 million degrees that day. (Okay, not really, but it was 96 when I sat down on my lawn chair before the ceremony started.) Everyone spent the whole wedding waving fans at each other, and as the alcohol started flowing, up each others’ dresses. People fought over the cool seats in the house, and women elbowed their way to claim a spot straddling the floor vents. I am not kidding when I say it was the hottest wedding I have ever been to, bar none. And I have been to a wedding on Hilton Head in July.

Here is Iain attempting to cool off pre-ceremony. How cute were the boys? They wore plaid ties, khakis, white button downs and chucks. Very cute.
Iain Cools Off

I think Todd got this one right before the ceremony. I like the way they are looking up.
Bridesmaids

This is Shannon’s friend, John, who performed the ceremony. He did a stellar job, and looked damn good doing it. Loved the Truman Capote look. It’s also my favorite photo from the weekend.
Preacher Man

I think this is about the point that we stopped taking photographs, by the way. I know, can you believe it? You can see the remainder of the photos on Dogwood Girl’s Flickr.

Shannon asked me to read in the wedding. I don’t know if it was the heat or too much fun the night before, or what, but somehow, the Officiant skipped right over my reading during the ceremony. I sat in the hot sun, and tried to figure out what I was supposed to do. Should I clear my throat loudly? Yell out during the ceremony? I finally decided that I should go with it and just let the ceremony go off seemingly without a hitch. And for the most part, very few folks noticed that I was on the wedding program, but did not read. Since Shannon might be disappointed that folks didn’t get to hear the reading, I am posting it here for all to see. This is an abridged version of a much longer children’s book. I just thought it was so very them, and Shannon did too. (I am guessing Matt never read it in the first place.)

Congratulations, Matt and Shannon. Best wishes for a long and joyful future together!

I Like You
by Sandol Stoddard Warburg

I like you and I know why.
I like you because you are a good person to like.
I like you because when I tell you something special, you know it’s special
And you remember it a long, long time.
You say, Remember when you told me something special
And both of us remember

When I think something is important
you think it’s important too
When I say something funny, you laugh
I think I’m funny and you think I’m funny too
I like you because you know where I’m ticklish
And you don’t tickle me there
except just a little tiny bit
sometimes
But if you do, then I know where to tickle you too

You know how to be silly
That’s why I like you
Boy are you ever silly
I never met anybody sillier than me till I met you
I like you because you know when it’s time to stop being silly
Maybe day after tomorrow
Maybe never
Too late, it’s a quarter past silly

Sometimes we don’t say a word
We snurkle under fences
We spy secret places
If I am a goofus on the roofus hollering my head off
You are one too
If I pretend I am drowning, you pretend you are saving me
If I am getting ready to pop a paper bag,
then you are getting ready to jump

That’s because you really like me
You really like me, don’t you
And I really like you back
And you like me back and I like you back
And that’s the way we keep on going every day

And I like you because if we go away together
And if we are in Grand Central Station
And if I get lost
Then you are the one that is yelling for me
“Where are you?”
“Here I am”

I like you because I don’t know why but
Everything that happens is nicer with you
I can’t remember when I didn’t like you
It must have been lonesome then

I like you because because because
I forget why I like you but I do
So many reasons
I don’t know why
I guess I don’t know why I really like you
Why do I like you
I guess I just like you
I guess I just like you because I love you.

A Song For Daddy, In New York

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Tiller asked me today, when we were laying on the bed reading after a day of waterlogging ourselves at the pool, “Mama? Where is Daddy? Is he lost?” He is out of town on business. So, we texted back and forth with Daddy for a while, and then she wanted to send him a song.

So, she sang this , on the fly, for me to record for him. First and only take.

For some reason my kids barely make a peep during this whole movie. I mean, I know why I don’t make a peep: Two words- Gerard Butler. But what is it that they love about it? Anyway, this is how they looked when I came upstairs to see why it was so quiet.

Busy as Hell Bee

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

We have been spending a lot of time at the baseball fields this spring. Rollie has a game and two practices a week. And then there is tiller’s Tiny Tykes practice every Sunday. And Todd’s new job with BBDO. (Speaking of, have you seen Todd’s previous work? He has a site.)

So, what we have been doing:

Tiller rides her Razor at the park, with her buddy Drake, while Rollie plays t-ball.
Helmet. See?

This is Tills and Drake, playing on the bleachers. Remember playing on the bleachers? Much more fun than being a parent keeping kids OFF the bleachers.
Tills and Drake

This is Rollie, with Zachary (if you call him Zach, this kid will actually tell you that his name is not Zach, it’s Zachary.) His dad’s a lawyer, and I didn’t ask for permission to post his picture on the site, because I like to live life on the edge. Zachary got whacked in the eye with a bat last week, but he is okay. His dad, who did the accidentally whacking, is probably now in therapy. That’s Kevin in the middle. He is small, but a strong hitter and i love how his batting helmet kind of wears him. I am also looking forward to meeting his new twin sisters. We’ve been driving Kev to practice a lot while his mom was on bedrest. He’s a cook kid. (His dad is a chef.) He is also a cool kid.

Zachary, Kev, and Rolls

We’ve been working on Rollie’s follow-through. We pitch to him in the backyard with the whiffle ball and bat and his follow through is fine, but when he hits off the tee, he seems to be concentrating so hard on hitting the ball off the tee that he is not following through. This one was pretty good, though.

Iain was a ZZ Top guy.

And T was Rick James, Bitch.

Even Richard Simmons was there.
Matt

Can’t remember this guy’s name, but he whips it good.

Matt did the Spicolli thing.

We went to Hilton Head and frolicked in the very cold water.

Had an Easter egg hunt at the Salty Dog Cafe . . .

And I dragged the family to the cemetery in Savannah to visit Pop’s grave.
Pop Marker

See how happy they look? That Tiller, one thing you can say about her, she sure does like to get dragged around to visit dead folks at cemeteries. Rollie? Oh, hissing under my breath that I will pop him if he doesn’t smile for the camera.
Me and kids

But it was a beautiful day for a visit to the Cemetery, and it seemed appropriate to visit on Easter. My grandmother, her brother and sister, and my great-grandparents are all buried there also.

Butler

Dash came to visit and we spent a ton of time in the yard. Tiller played ball.

Rollie ran around looking like a Cecil Jr. with no shirt and wrecking his toy in the backyard.

And finally, Rollie saw a bee and freaked out.

The bee did not sting him. No bees were harmed in the photographing of this boring post.

Life Gets in the Way, But Let Me Fast Forward It For You

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

This has been my worst month of posting in years. Life has really gotten in the way. Many reasons come into play. Me training for another triathlon. Work. Lots of company, like Todd’s cousin Jenn, and my friend Honey and her family, and my mom is having surgery on her foot, and mom and dad having moved, a neighbor and i started a community website, Dekalb county board of education sucks, and I have to sometimes cook and do laundry and make beds, or at least enough so that todd won’t divorce me.

A recap in pictures (just hold your mouse over each one for the witty caption):
We had a cookout. With Ned and Nessie.
And Ned and Leelee
Lyle, Cooke, and Rollie
Dashie
Rolls, Scar, and Tills
and Cooke, Rolls, Scar, and Tills
Then there was the day that Tills cut her own bangs.
I ran a daycare for like 50 kids a few days.
I took the kids and T. to see Donnie's Girlfriend's gallery opening. We did not get drunk which was disappointing.
We went to Roswell for Ev's baby shower.
Lisa Drove. I drank. And tried on wigs with jason.
They're having a baby. Better them than me!
Oh, and J. had an orgasm in Ev's parents' massage chair. (Didn't we all.)
We took the kids to see They Might Be Giants.
And then afterwards, they decided to hang out in L5P and look cool.
We all got goofy at Morelli's.
And Tiller.
Okay, Todd is just too cool in his shades to act goofy. FYI: He found'em on the escalator at the airport and pocketed them. Poser.
Then Honey came to visit and Dash made me jealous.
And we all went to the St. Patty's Day Parade and froze our asses off.
I still don't know what Storm Troopers have to do with St. Patty's, but I'm on board.
We all rode Marta and managed to get home without losing any kids, or Slade, who is part Leprechaun.
I fell in love with this little guy. Had forgotten awesomeness of baby sleeping soundly on couch while I got quietly smashed on wine.
And this one, Honey's mini-me.
And we were just as worn out as they were. . .

I guess that kind of sums it up.

Yeah, Dogwood is back. She’s back!

Honey and the Busy Bee

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

IMG_0004My excitement holds no bounds today. My friend Honey, my college roommate, is coming in town and staying with me for four days. FOUR DAYS. Sure, there will be kids and husbands and dogs underfoot, but I am so excited to spend some quality time with one of my dearest friends. Ever have a person that you know, deep down, realizes that you are not perfect and loves you anyway? A person that you know has your back? A person that isn’t scared to tell you what they really think? She is that person for me. (Well, leelee falls into that category, too, but this post isn’t about Leelee.)

Just wish this dang weather would clear up.

That picture up top? that’s me and Honey, sitting in front of my little dollhouse off of Milledge Avenue in Athens. It was the last place I lived in Athens, and this picture was taken the day after I graduated. I am pretty sure we felt really good that day.

And yes, you may have noticed I’ve been a little MIA lately. We’ve had houseguests (Todd’s cousin, Jenn, and her friend Brittany) in town. Jenn and Brittany are thinking about moving to Atlanta, so they came down to look around and get a feel for the city. (Nice weather for them, huh?) I’ve been doing a lot of stuff following the Dekalb County budget issues. Following local politics is damn time-consuming. And then there’s the kids. . . turns out they need to be fed and bathed and picked up and dropped off and you have to make sure that they don’t watch too much tv. I have been bad about that, and I am hereby vowing to be better. So, Dogwood Girl takes a backseat for a while. I have missed it, though. It keeps me sane.
